April Session Recap - Skellingtons, Bad Bets, The T-Rex, and the Standoff

In our April session, the party made their first real foray into the interior, after doing some investigation in Port Nyzanru.

Additionally, I came to some conclusions about minor rules tweaks that we're going to need to make in order to move things along at the table during combat: 1. We'll be using group initiative (one roll per side) then just going around the table in order for actions during combat. 2. I'm going to encourage rolling damage at the same time as attack rolls (for example, if I had Azaka attack with her 2 handed sword, I'd roll a 20-sided die and 2 six sided dice a the same time, and apply whatever damage was rolled if a hit is determined.) 3. Once players are a bit more comfortable with abilities, I'll institute a turn timer.

Part 1: Investigation in Port Nyzanru:

Following a spirited discussion at the port, the group split into 3 (and then into 4) groups, to follow a number of leads, including an airship known as the Star Goddess, dinosaur racing, identifying a magic dagger, and a guide named Azaka Stormfang.

Investigations into the Star Goddess led to a dead end, the ship had disembarked from port Nyzanru a week and a half prior, heading south to do some sight-seeing over the mountains before continuing along to another island.

Another small group went over to do some dinosaur racing. After some time investigating and looking for ways to release the dinosaurs, or alter the chances of the race,  both bet their money on the same dinosaur, leading to a serious loss.

Chimis split off completely on his own and ended up following a number of dead-end leads to try and get his dagger identified.

The final small group met with Azaka Stormfang, a tej-drunk guide hanging out at the Elasmosaur and the Catamaran. She offered to help guide the group to Orolunga, or anywhere else that they wanted to go, on the condition that they help her recover a family heirloom from the Pterrafolk of Firefinger.

After some disussion, and promises of sobriety, the group decided to take Azaka up on her offer.

Part II: Into the interior

The group set off south from Port Nyzanru, eventually tracking south along a river before making their way to Firefinger, an old signal tower and roost of the Pterrafolk, running into a number of dangerous situations on the way.

First, they ran into a group of very sick bats flapping around during the daylight, desperate for food. Fi Fi used her ranger abilities to speak to them, and after some discussion, they agreed to follow at 500 bat-lengths (which actually translates to about 100 feet if going by average body length of a brown bat).  The group discovered some unsafe water sources and other bats presumably killed by sickness.

Several nights later, during the pre-dawn hours, the group was attacked by a mob of skeletons during the night. Things looked pretty rough at first, but once the party was mobilized, and many of the skeletons were turned by the holy power of Stugg's god, the tide turned.

The last major encounter on the way to Firefinger was a lone T-Rex that was hunting off some distance away. Most of the party took up stealthy/defensive positions upon hearing the noise, but Chimis took it upon himself to investigate and call out to the beast. Before long, a full sized T-Rex was upon him, leading to a desperate escape aided by Chimis's natural fish-person magic, and a well-timed illusion from Maxwell.

Part III: Firefinger

The group eventually tracked south to Firefinger, an old signal tower rising hundreds of feet above the the surrounding forest. Following Azaka's advice, the group waited until nightfall to attempt an infiltration. The 2 rogues made their way in on an initial scouting run before being chased out by spiders, which the group dispatched. After a  bit more spelunking, climbing, and killing cat-sized mosquitoes(with a thunderous blast powered by Stugg's deity), the group climbed their way up to the nest of the elder Pterrafolk.

Hundreds of feet above the jungle, starlight above, 2 young Pterrafolk flew down to investigate the noises made by the party, and to protect their elders. The group engaged in tense negotiation with them, Monty leading the conversation in draconic. The Pterrafolk seemed somewhat willing to engage in trade, but strongly implied that they would only take magic in exchange for the tiger mask. Additionally, the Pterrafolk tried to goad members of the party into turning on Azaka Stormfang, suggesting that 1)she had lied to them about the importance of the mask and 2) that they would help the group find things if they tossed her from the tower. Negotiations came to a standstill, and we closed the session on a cliffhanger. XP will be rewarded following the resolution of the situation in the tower.
