Black Hack Dark Sun - Classes as character sheets

Thanks to a Tweet from the creator of the Black Hack, I got a bug up my gullet this weekend about the prospect of making character sheets that include all the information one needs to play a class.

So, to test that concept, I built one out for the Defiler, one of the more fun/weird Athasian things. Basically a wizard, plus some horrifying risks to the environment and the self.

I spent a lot of time trying to think of how to differentiate the Defiler/Preserver class without going into weird 2nd Edition AD&D stuff of differential XP. So, honestly the simplest way to do it is just with advantage and disadvantage. In Blackhack, there's already a fun little mechanic for holding on to spells after casting them.

In Dark Sun Black Hack, the defiler can do that without disadvantage, but does have to turn a bunch of plants and soil bacteria to ash in order to do it. Additionally, they risk corruption (1/20 chance, so it will definitely happen in the course of play.)

Aside from descriptions of the spells, this seems to cover basically everything one would need to play a defiler.

Link is below. I intend to do one of these for every class available before I start the campaign. Next up will be preserver, since it's clearly the closest.

  1. Dark Sun + Black Hack sounds like a great flavor pairing. A couple questions: So you have to defile both when memorizing and casting? Can a defiler cast or memorize when there is nothing to defile within the vicinity, like in the middle of a barren desert? Can you add some white space padding between the portrait/equipment boxes and the class text?

I'd be intrigued to see how a player of a defiler feels about the cost of defiling vegetation, since it is mechanically only as bad as that particular vegetation is vital to the PC or nearby community. Likely players will more strongly feel the non-mechanical enmity of locals whose sparse vegetation was defiled.

    1. Thanks for jumping in with questions.

As to question 1. Yes. Basically any time you are gathering that spell energy. I should make it clear though, one could always choose to not try and hold the spell slot when casting, in which case they'd just be losing the memorized spell for the day.

      2. I'd prefer it to be impossible to gather spell energy in a completely lifeless place.

      3. I should definitely add more white space. I don't have a lot of visual design background.

      4. I agree. Seeing how players decide to frame that choice sounds really interesting to me
